The rule of thumb is your coffee table should be 12 to 18 inches away from your seating. The height of your coffee table should be no more than 1 to 2 inches lower than the seats in your couch or chairs.

How to Care for Rattan

You will need the following items  to clean your rattan portion of your coffee table:

  • Dishwashing soap
  • Water
  • Bowl
  • Soft cloths
  • Toothbrush

Follow the steps below:

  • Add a small amount of dish soap to a bowl filled with water
  • Stir to create bubbles on the top
  • In the bubbles only dip a soft cloth not touching the water
  • Gently wipe the rattan with the cloth-covered bubbles. 
  • Do not saturate the rattan
  • Use a soft toothbrush to clean in crevices and cracks using only the bubbles

Repeat this process every week to keep your rattan looking its best. 

How to Deep Clean Your Rattan


You will need the following items to deep clean or remove stains from your rattan:

  • Dish detergent
  • Water
  • Bowl
  • Hairdryer
  • Lacquer
  • Paintbrush

To effectively deep clean or remove stains from rattan you will need to add a little more water and scrub the rattan, again do not saturate the rattan.  As soon as you complete the cleaning, using a hair dryer on hot setting, dry the rattan. Ensuring the rattan has completely dried, using a paintbrush apply a light coat of lacquer, this will add protection to the rattan. 

You should deep clean your rattan once a year. 

How to Restore Your Rattan

To restore rattan that is cracked, dry, or split, you will need the following items:

  • Boiled Linseed Oil
  • Soft brush
  • Soft cloth

Follow the steps below to restore your rattan:

Apply boiled linseed oil with a soft brush until the rattan stops absorbing the oil

With a soft cloth wipe the rattan clean

Before using the rattan, allow it to dry or harden

This should be done whenever you notice the rattan drying out, cracking or splitting. 

Note: Boiled linseed oil can be purchased at your local hardware store. Ensure you always use boiled linseed oil because the raw version will not dry or harden. 

Adding rubber stoppers to the bottom of the feet of your rattan coffee table will help prevent the rattan from splitting and cracking.

Many people enjoy an outdoor living space. Rattan furniture can create a feeling of being in the islands. You can use rattan furniture and coffee tables outdoors. However it is best to protect it from the sun and elements. The rattan will last much longer if you protect it.
